The story of The Thread is about a nice Jewish girl, a really great guy and a gift from a rabbi. The gift was in the form of a message that the Rabbi offered her as she struggled to decide if the "really great guy" was going to be "The" guy, despite a significant philosophical challenge for her with their relationship.
After a dinner and long conversation, the frustrated nice Jewish girl and the rabbi left the restaurant. She felt no closer to a resolution. The rabbi hailed a cab and just as he was about to get in, he turned to her and he said:
"I want to leave you with one last thought.... There is a very fine thread that connects you back to that moment on Sinai when God gave us the Torah, and no matter what you do in life or what choices you make, you will always be a Jewish woman and the next generation of all those who stood before you," and he got in the cab and left.
She stood on the sidewalk and cried.
She didn't marry the really great guy but the Rabbi's words stayed with her. She has told that story for over 20 years, but it became more than just that moment in time and that one decision. Through it she came to understand the nature of that Thread and how it defined for her an unbreakable connection to her Jewish roots and the traditions and values that were passed on to her. It was seemingly tenuous and sometimes easy to ignore, but unbelievably surprisingly strong. Eventually she was the conduit, connecting her child, the next generation, to the long history of those that stood before her. The Thread HaChut was created to enable other Jewish women to experience the beauty and strength of that connection.
